Definitions

What is Onshoring?

More than just a buzzword, onshoring refers to the practice of bringing business and manufacturing operations back to the country where they are based, rather than outsourcing them to a foreign country. In our specific case, this means bringing your investment casting projects to the United States!

There are tons of benefits to onshoring that we’ll get into on this page, but first, we’d like to tackle the difference between onshoring, nearshoring, and offshoring/farshoring.

01

Nearshoring

Nearshoring is the practice of outsourcing manufacturing or other business operations to nearby foreign countries. The rationale behind nearshoring includes the desire to reduce costs while still maintaining a closer geographical, cultural, and temporal proximity to the core operations of a business.

02

Offshoring/Farshoring

This is the practice of outsourcing your business or manufacturing operations to a foreign country typically to leverage lower labor costs, favorable economic conditions, tax benefits, or more lenient regulations.

03

Onshoring

Onshoring means bringing all your outsourced work back to your home country. Businesses choose to go onshore for several reasons: manufacturing mandates, tax credits/grants, more straightforward communication, intellectual property protection, reduced supply chain complexity, and more.

Perks of Onshoring

Why Should My Business
Choose to Onshore?

While onshoring may not offer the cost-savings of foreign manufacturing, dozens of factors can make onshoring a game-changer for your business. From regulatory compliance and simple, effective communication to manufacturing tax credits and beyond, the decision to transition to onshore manufacturing is increasingly appealing - and for good reason!

In this section, we’ll explore just a few perks of onshoring and how the team IPC can help you bring your casting work back to the United States.

01

Regulatory Compliance

When choosing a US-based foundry, you, by default, follow US manufacturing standards. These standards include safety, emissions, worker’s rights, and other benchmarks that may not be met in a foreign foundry. Your specific industry may require that you meet some or all of these standards, and your customers may expect you to follow them. Whatever your specific case may be, you can rest easy by selecting an American foundry.

  • The IPC Foundry Group has two US-based foundries located in Utah and Texas. We also have dozens of regional finishing, machining, and testing partners throughout the United States. We have over 50 years of experience serving thousands of clients across various industries. Whatever regulations, testing, or certification needs your projects require, our team is willing to go the extra mile to get you to market quickly, efficiently, and without compromise.

02

UL-Certification and Similar Standards

Many industries, like aerospace, marine, petrochemical, and medical, have strict quality mandates and require special certifications like UL or ISO before products can go to market. As a bonus, these certifications carry global recognition, positioning your domestically produced products for a successful release in any market.

Quality US-based foundries meet these standards and will work with you to help you achieve the necessary testing and certifications for your product(s).

  • At IPC Foundry Group, we are committed to onshoring investment casting work that demands production within the United States. Recognizing the significance of UL certification, which mandates manufacturing on American soil, we offer extensive experience in partnering with midsize and large corporations. Our collaborative approach involves a thorough understanding of our customers' requirements, enabling us to tailor our capacities to meet their needs. Often, we go beyond traditional collaborations by investing in our facilities to meet the ongoing needs of our clients, ensuring a seamless qualification, onboarding, and production process.

03

Environmental Sustainability and Reduced Carbon Footprint

Opting for onshoring in investment casting ensures proximity to your business operations. This proximity reduces the transportation distance for raw materials and finished products, leading to shorter travel distances and decreased emissions.

The growing trend toward clean manufacturing in the US highlights the commitment of modern domestic foundries to embrace energy-efficient tech and sustainable production methods. By leveraging these advancements, you can significantly minimize the environmental impact of your metalworking projects.

  • With foundries located in Texas and Utah, we offer seamless, direct shipping throughout the United States and Canada. This means quicker turnaround times and lower carbon emissions.

Furthermore, we’re committed to investing in energy-efficient equipment in our foundries. For example, in 2024, we implemented new flashfire autoclaves, providing cleaner burnout of our ceramic shells and increased efficiency in recycling our investment casting wax.

04

Intellectual Property & Patent Protection

Onshoring investment casting projects can provide an added layer of protection for intellectual property. Dealing with a domestic foundry reduces the risks associated with intellectual property theft or unauthorized replication, offering a sense of security for companies investing in proprietary designs and technologies.

A US-based foundry will also operate within a comparable legal framework, meaning if litigation must occur, it will be smoother and considerably cheaper than international litigation.

  • The IPC Foundry Group strives to make itself a partner you can count on from onboarding to shipping and everything in between. Whether you prefer to discuss project particulars under NDA or require additional privacy measures during your production cycle, our dedicated team of experts is ready to go the extra mile for you.

05

Seamless Communication

Partnering with a U.S.-based foundry offers the advantage of direct and prompt communication. You can avoid the hassle of adjusting your schedule to manage significant timezone differences. This enables real-time updates, feedback, and collaborative problem-solving. The risk of miscommunication due to language barriers is also significantly reduced.

The significance of open and accessible communication cannot be emphasized enough, especially in intricate processes like investment casting. Instead of spending hours in frustration, opt for productivity. A production partner with effective communication skills can make a substantial difference, saving you from countless headaches.

  • The IPC Foundry Group has a facility in Marble Falls, Texas (just minutes from Austin) and Lindon, Utah (40 minutes south of Salt Lake City).

We aim to be a trustworthy, collaborative partner with open lines of communication around the clock. Each project will have a dedicated team member to contact for updates, questions, concerns, and more. Feel free to contact your dedicated team member via call, text, email, or Zoom anytime.

Want to visit one of our foundries in person and get a first-hand look at your project? No problem! Feel free to swing by either of our foundries. Even before you have committed to a project with us, we offer free foundry tours so you can see our process in action.

06

Visit the Foundry in-Person

Choosing a domestic foundry gives you an excellent opportunity to visit your investment casting partner easily with significantly reduced costs when compared to an international partner.

This lets you inspect their facilities and ensure they meet your production needs. Additionally, you can watch the casting process firsthand and build a stronger partnership with your manufacturing team.

  • Our doors are open! You can book an in-person tour of either our Texas or Utah Foundry. Take a look at our equipment and capabilities and see how we can scale and adapt to your project’s needs.

During your production cycle, feel free to stop by anytime or hop on a video call to check in on your project.

07

Simplify Your Supply Chain

Streamlining your supply chain is one of the most straightforward perks of onshoring your investment casting projects. By onshoring, you can expect shorter turnaround times, lightning-fast shipping, and an overall quicker time to market.

This perk can be amplified during pre-production or follow-up production cycles. Domestic foundries grant quicker access to revisions, prototypes, and first articles, allowing you to test and experiment with your cast components sooner and make manufacturing decisions in a fraction of the time.

  • IPC’s two domestic foundries work in tandem to offer you increased capacity and a fast turnaround for your investment casting work. Our expansive network of machining and finishing partners means that any secondary operations happen without delay, getting you to market quicker than ever.

08

Grants & Tax Incentives

A significant reason for the recent trend of onshoring stems from a surge of grants, tax credits, and government mandates in the United States. One such example is the Biden Administration's Build Back Better initiative (keep scrolling to learn more).

Beyond Federal grants and tax credits, many States and local governments offer grants, cost savings, and more for local businesses that keep all of their manufacturing stateside.

Choosing to onshore your investment casting needs can unlock a variety of unexpected benefits. Be sure to do your homework!

  • Besides offering a solution to your investment casting needs, we try to keep our finger on the pulse of the industry. We believe in being a partner you can count on throughout your investment casting journey, and when we discover a cost-saving opportunity, we’ll pass it on to you.

09

Made in the USA Marketing

Opting to manufacture your products in the United States gives you high-quality castings and an incredible marketing tool.

For customers and corporations, β€œMade in the USA” signifies more than originβ€”it embodies pride, quality, ethical business practices, and a commitment to supporting local economies.

Depending on your industry, this can be a compelling way to resonate with your customer base and can be just one more slam-dunk reason to choose onshoring for your casting work.

  • The IPC Foundry Group has provided quality casting work in the United States for over 50 years, with roots in Texas dating back to the 1970s and in Utah since 1980.

With richly experienced teams, our modern foundries are scalable and endlessly adaptable to meet your production needs. Contact us today to get started!

A Quick Look at Build Back Better

Onshoring & Build Back Better

In 2021, the Biden Administration announced the Build Back Better Framework, a plan that, among other things, incentivizes businesses that bring their manufacturing back to the United States and promotes clean energy development with American-made metal parts.

Your business may be able to take advantage of numerous tax incentives and grants, especially if you are in the energy or transportation industry.

The IPC Foundry Group can provide a trusted, US-based foundry to help you as you bring your investment casting work back to the United States. Do your homework and see if you qualify for parts of the Build Back Better framework!
